Why is the red-light district called the “Red Zone”?

The explanation that has the most support among historians is the one that traces the origin to Europe, specifically to the Republic of Venice in the 16th century (now Italy). Venice was at that time a thriving city-state, teeming with courtesans who practiced prostitution in every corner of the city, a situation that many of its citizens found intolerable. Consequently, the authorities intervened, registering the courtesans and strictly regulating the practice of prostitution.

As part of these regulations, the city was ahead of its time and established what we now know as a red-light district in the Rialto Carampane neighborhood. Prostitution was permitted only there, and brothels were required to mark their doors with a distinctive red light.
