Since Lent required practitioners to behave in a righteous and chaste manner, the best way to avoid temptation was to precede it with a brief period of debauchery. As an unwritten rule, Carnival provided an opportunity to let loose and enjoy oneself, just before a long period of abstinence.

When did Carnival, with its more erotic content, make a comeback?

Although the celebrations that gave rise to Carnival were highly sensual in nature, Christian authorities always tried to keep them in check. With varying degrees of success—some good, some moderate, and some none at all, depending on the region—they managed to do so until the mid-1960s, when the sexual liberation movements reached their peak.
