Joan Miró

Joan Miró i Ferrà was considered one of the leading figures of Surrealism worldwide, although in his early years he was strongly influenced by the Fauves, Cubists, and Expressionists. It was during his time in Paris that his work evolved from a “naïve” style—as seen in the painting “La Masía,” which he created in 1920—to the discovery of Surrealism as the true essence of his art, in which he reflected his dreamlike interest in the subconscious, the most primitive and the most essential aspects of the various realities of human existence.

He was also a sculptor, printmaker, and a great ceramic artist.

He championed surrealist expression as the true rebirth of expression, which he conceived of as being free of any order or premise.

He rejected conventional approaches that viewed painting as something purely aesthetic.

In 1975, he founded the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona as a cultural and artistic center dedicated to promoting new forms of expression in contemporary art, to which he donated a large number of his works; his world-famous paintings are on display in museums such as the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, and the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation in Palma de Mallorca.
